Story of Saint Mary Bernarda Verena Butler (1848-1924)

She was born in Ow, District Argovia, Switzerland, May 28, 1848. On that day, he received the sacrament of baptism. He was the fourth child of the couple Henry and Catherine Butler. Verena Mary Bernarda Butler is her name.
Verena is present in a simple family. He suffered childhood full of happiness. Verena started school at the age of seven years. With great enthusiasm, he received first communion on April 16, 1860. His loyalty to the Eucharist, later became the basis of spirituality.
After completing elementary school at the age of 14, Verena worked on a farm. He had grown into a teenage girl. Because kemolekannya, many men who fell in love. However, the call of God kept ringing in his heart. He also decided, turned fully to God. "The Holy Spirit has taught me to admire, praise, bless and give thanks to Jesus all the time, even in the workplace and in everyday life," he said one day.
At the age of 18, Verena entered the convent gate. On the advice of a priest, Verena entered the Franciscan convent in Altstätten on November 12, 1867. With great love and passion, he started living in the monastery with the name of Sister Mary Bernarda.
One day, he received an invitation from the Bishop of Portoviejo, Ecuador, Mgr Peter Schumacher. He was asked to assist in humanitarian work in Ecuador who are experiencing difficult times. Along with six companions, Sister Mary Bernarda leave Altstätten to Ecuador on June 19, 1888. On arrival in Ecuador, he was treated to a sad spectacle. People trapped in poverty, people unserved because of a shortage of priests, and practices are rampant amorality. In my heart, Sister Mary Bernarda said, "Everything will I dedicate to all people." He also put the prayer, poverty, loyalty to the Church, and all his work to God.
Together with daughters, sisters Mary Bernarda begin to work with visiting Catholic families, as well as to hone the language and explore the culture of society. Poverty is acute, hot, uncertainty, health risks and safety are always facing each step sister Mary Bernarda. However, Sister Mary Bernarda deal with all of that by continuing to produce and to always pray for those who suffer.
As if the challenges do not want to lurk Sister Mary Bernarda edged. In 1895, a riot broke out involving persecution in Ecuador. Sister Mary Bernard's security is threatened. Together with 14 nuns, he fled toward the Bahia, then to Colombia. In Colombia, Sister Mary Bernarda received Cartagena Bishop, Msgr Eugene Biffi. Here, he established a special hospital for women.
Sister Mary Bernarda has the motto "guide and I am a gospel star." Motto that was real in life. He left his homeland, never to return until his death. He often leaves all the existing facilities at the monastery and to serve those who are poor, weak and marginalized. Because of the poor in this, she found support and comfort provided by God.
Despite various obstacles prevented, his heart was always called to help others, especially the poor. He often told his colleagues, "Open your home to help the poor and marginalized." Pain in the stomach as he had never felt. He remained faithful to serve those who suffer. Until the age of 74, exactly 19 May 1924, he was called God.
Sister Mary Bernarda news of the death spread rapidly throughout Cartagena. At that moment, a priest at the Cathedral of Cartagena spontaneously announced, "A saint has died in this city, this morning. Sister Mary Bernarda he is. "And, since that time, Sister Mary Bernarda burial place became the center of pilgrimage and prayer.
Speech priest at the Cathedral of Cartagena came true 71 years later. Pope John Paul II, Sister Mary Bernarda membeatifikasi on October 29, 1995. And, on October 12, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI gave the title of saint in Sister Mary Bernarda.
